Sage support - only available from Sage direct?

Sage are very keen to sign users up to their Sagecover service. Review of their UK profit and loss suggests their motivation! Nevertheless the support they deliver is high quality and a reasonable cost if you make any significant use of it, so it's often good for the customer as well as good for Sage.
Sage offer direct support mainly for their products aimed at small and medium businesses, including the Instant range, Sage 50 (Sage Line 50 as was), ACT! and Sage 50 Payroll.
They typically don't offer direct support for their more complex products, such as Sage 200. For these products the only choice is normally to team up with a Sage Business Partner. Fortunately there are a good number of these and many are competent and good to work with.
So should you take support directly from Sage when it is available? For payroll products, the answer is a simple yes. The basis of this is twofold: legislation changes results in frequent software changes; and Sage provide excellent support for the payroll year end.
For other products the answer is more complex. Their are companies who offer fixed price support for Sage 50. In some instances this is simply cheaper than Sage's service, but buying from Sage directly means that you are assured of a minimum standard of service.
Other companies offer pay as you go Sage support. If you are already very familiar with Sage 50, then these can be good alternatives. Potentially they are cheaper, and certainly the better ones offer a different kind of support to Sage, for example being prepared to take on issues which could be either a Sage problem or a general network problem.
Lastly there are a few web based Sage support forums. The problem with these is that they aren't really busy enough to be assured of a quick answer. Nevertheless if you're very money conscious and don't mind waiting for a while, they have the merit of being free.
