Social media marketing is using widely available web resources to promote your website, business, or cause, and it makes a lot of sense because it does not require a big investment of money, but in the long term it can pay off nicely. While social media marketing can't do all your marketing heavy lifting, it should definitely be a part of your web strategy.
By creating content and doing things to help it get popular on sites like StumbleUpon and Digg, you're potentially exposing your content to millions of people. If you use Facebook and Twitter, you can leverage these sites to draw attention to your content. The ultimate - the holy grail of social media marketing is having a piece of content (whether it's a photo, story, video, or podcast) go "viral" meaning it spreads rapidly to large numbers of web surfers, driving heavy traffic to your site and potentially getting you a larger steady audience / customer base.
Once your content develops popularity, you'll get more links from other sites to yours. Search engines put a lot of weight on these as long as they are natural, legitimate links and not links from a link trading scheme or worse, paid links. High quality back links will boost your site's search engine ranking and help keep it on the first page of search results.
While some people think that sites like Digg only result in useless traffic, and that visitors will just have a look and be gone. While that's true, if the numbers are large enough, you'll have a significant increase in your long term traffic. What often happens is that your traffic will take a big jump, and then simmer back down over the next few days. And the traffic you get from other sites often consists of users who have a specific interest in your site's content and will therefore build up your online brand.
